The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is a part of the Department of Health and Human Services.  It is the U.S. government entity which, along with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, is charged with the primary responsibility for ensuring a safe food supply, ensuring the safety of cosmetics, and ensuring the efficacy and safety of medical drugs and devices.

The FDA enforces its rules and regulations both at the border through the Bureau of Customs and Border Protection and with its own officials.

Of particular to concern to importers and foreign manufacturers are the following:

a) Bioterrorism (Public Health Security and Bioterrorism Preparedness and Response Act of 2002) and the registration requirements for all manufacturers, importers and distributors.
b) Nutrition Fact Labeling
c) Country of Origin Labeling
d) Allergen Labeling
e) Other Labeling
